Q: What is Wellspring of Greenbrier, Inc. and what does this organization do?
A: Wellspring is a 501c3 non-profit organization that assists the working poor, homeless, transient and other people living in poverty throughout Greenbrier County. It is an all volunteer agency with no paid staff, with the exception of an Americorps VISTA member and an Experience Works associate.
We are beginning our fifth year at our current location, and our seventh year as an organization.
Q: How is Wellspring related to Lewisburg United Methodist Church and why is LUMC interested/involved with the work of Wellspring?
A: Wellspring was "born" on Oct. 3, 2004 at LUMC during a meeting called "Listen and Discover," at which time community leaders met to discuss various needs in Greenbrier County. During the following months, many of these leaders assisted in developing the first few programs to help families in need. LUMC members have donated funds, given of their time, given in-kind gifts and contributed in every possible way to make Wellspring a success. The church also includes Wellspring in its budget and therefore considers it to be part of the church's out-reach ministry to a hurting world on the local front.
Q: Where is the Wellspring Center located and what does the facility include?
A: The organization existed for two years in the automobile of Fred and Scarlett Kellerman, the founders and directors of Wellspring, who visited the homes of people requesting help. On September 30, 2006, they moved into their present center in Rupert, located next to the Rupert City Hall. The center includes a welcome station, large social area, data office, children's space, laundry area, handicap accessible bathrooms with shower, fully equipped kitchen, prayer room and guest office. There is also a large warehouse space and workshop to accommodate tools and equipment. The second floor of the building includes seven low-income rental apartments.
Q: How is Wellspring funded?
A: Funding for the past six and a half years has come from individuals, churches, businesses and private foundations. LUMC has played a major role in this support.
Q: Why is Wellspring seeking your help today?
A: Wellspring works with virtually every service organization in Greenbrier County. Wellspring is often considered the "agency of choice," particularly in regards to transient and homeless people. Unfortunately, during recent months, incidents of need have increased while funding has decreased leaving the entire social network at risk and unable to keep the pace with all the demands. Your help is critical!
Q: What does the name "Wellspring" mean and why was it chosen for this organization?
A: "Wellspring" means "eternal source" and is often used as a metaphor for God, as in "God, the wellspring of life."
